After Radio yackin, read this
Just in from one of our faithful: Evidently just a few weeks ago the discovery of a “new” fat-related hormone was reported on in a major scientific journal, giving hope and insight to our never-ending quest for a better understanding of our metabolic processes.
What I believe Lee is referring to is oxyntomodulin, a naturally occurring hormone (all hormones are “naturally occurring”, one would think) that caused “weight loss” in a recent UK study.
The problem? This was accomplished by decreasing normal appetite mechanisms, not through nifty tricks with beta sites. Beta 2 agonists, for example, increase thermogenic responses, therefore radically increase fat loss. All it costs you is your health, your adrenal glands, and possibly your life. Small price, eh?
In the future, a B2A may be developed (or a B3A…or B112A, if there was such a thing) that does not stimulate the nervous system and cardiovascular mechanisms to allow for greater internal body heat. That would be a nifty thing — but again, this does not solve the challenge.
The only thing that will solve the challenge is YOU.
There’s nothing wrong with eating, folks — it’s what you’re eating that’s the problem. Seriously, have you ever know anyone who got fat from eating too many apples, too much celery, or too much lean organic protein foods? No? Me neither. There you go — secret solved.
Bottom line — tricking the body into thinking it’s not hungry when it actually ‘needs’ to eat in order to lose weight is no different than making the body believe it’s wide awake when it needs to sleep.
Speed does that, and it’s illegal in most countries.
This just in (posted Day 49)
It’s possible that Lee was referring to a new (read: old, but made to look new) study on the hormone leptin. If so, Christian Finn, M.Sc. has a great article on that article — and you can trust Christian’s opinion on such things much more than the media’s slant.
Thanks for bringing this up, Lee — it is an important topic! {10}

Even though I believe that medications can be useful in some environments, I get *really* ticked off at the majority of the population thinking that they can pop a pill to solve all their problems. A lot of diseases can be prevented if we’d just take care of ourselves and the people that we love. Thanks, Jon, for continuing to point out that we are responsible for our health, and need to be self-accountable and take action.

You’re welcome, but no, it was not leptin, although the lecturer spoke at length on that, too. I think the hormone’s name had only two syllables, however. Now I’m kicking myself for not having taken notes on my dinner napkin!
