Bingo is sore
…and I mean S O R E. Like Richard Gere sore, or so one would imagine. Well, I’m sore in places that don’t make the tabloids.
As absurd and strange as it sounds even to my ears, my first leg workout in almost a year was a few days ago. That’s right — it’s been that long since my initial injuries (non-training) and funk-a-skunk trip down Heartache Highway and Dizzy Drive…and other streets that have since gone under construction.
A year. Wow. You would not believe…scratch that. I cannot believe how “weak” I’ve become. Odd, as my legs “look” almost the same, minus about 4 inches. My legs hold their shape — unlike the rest of me. Still, I never thought I’d see the day when squats with little more than the Olympic bar would cause soreness the next day, and intense soreness the day after.
I knew it would be a while before training legs. The great news is that I didn’t get the dizzies. My supplements and whacko theories are working, I suppose. The tough news is that bodyweight squats now seem hard.
My knee — well, that little Jacko threw a fit, but after a few errant tendons were ripped off the “it shouldn’t be there anyway” bone, it decided to cooperate. Immediately after the workout, I placed my qigong device on the buddhawaterblocker pain in the Rummy and woke up the next day to ‘zero’ knee pain.
As incredible as this device has been to my healing, it still surprises me. The moment I put it on the joint, I felt heat — and the device generates NO heat. That’s qi, the body’s energy (or “life force” if you will) surging to the rescue. Wonderful machine, this body of ours.
All I have is super-sore quads, which is exactly what I wanted. In 4 days, I’ll hit them again, and something tells me that the weight will take a leap upward.
Meanwhile I’m pressing on with my next 10, feeling better and better, and I have the added pleasure of having my bestest bud in town for 4 days with her little rugrat. “Jan and Monster” — I feel so…
…domestic.
Yeah. That’s the word. I’m living vicariously through my friend Pete. It’s so much fun having a mini-person running around the crib…and to spend time with a good friend.
A good friend who is going to kick my ass in the gym tomorrow.
Sorry I’ve been a bit unresponsive to all your wonderful comments…promise, I’ll catch up this week. Anna, you rock — Mike, you rock — Greg, you rock — Todd, you need to switch teams, but you still rock — and so-forth it shall go. {10}

How well I know that pain. The one you get after the first workout coming back from too long at the gym. The one that has me walking funny for a week after working the calves. When I first wake I have to walk sideways down the stairs. My boys start making quacking noises. No blood test required, the boys are mine, my sense of humor.
I have had some bug maybe a low grade flu, a sinus infection? I don’t know but it has really messed up my workout for weeks. The last few days it has blown up in to a normal cold, well more or less anyway. Is this finally the end? I will try once again to get back to my lifting today after work and see how it goes. If I can train then I will be taking my measurements and photos this weekend and watch out! This old ugly gonna be slamming in the pit with Bingo. We can discuss that whole picking up teenagers thing off site.
If I am not better I will go nuts. I am training a lady in my gym and she is progressing very nicely. This forces me in my gym even though I just can’t train. I run my hand lovingly over the cool steel of the squat cage like a long lost lover. I heft the 7 foot bar feeling her weight, the lack of power in my arms. I swear sweetie you have put on a few during my absence. She just hums gently in my hands and I know it isn’t that she increased in weight or volume, she is just a 7 foot 45 pound bar, how could she. It is I, I lower my head in shame and request forgiveness from her. My strength has faltered. To me she is not just some old bar. She balances the weight so carefully for me as I snuggle her on my shoulders to squat. She nestles in to my hands when benching as familiar as a lovers palm. She supports me in attaining my goals more then any other. The plates that I bought for their safety and ease of use with the handles built in. The pulleys that I myself had put together on the back of the squat cage. On and on it goes. I love my gym. I need to get back to her.
Fortunately I must get ready to go to work now. I think a cold shower is required. Have a great day all. Love like you can, train like you should and eat what the body really and truly wants and deserves.

What? And become a Dallas fan?? Please excuse me while I try out this new cardio method you’ve just created with that suggestion, and laugh myself down to my 10% BF goal…
Redskins fan becoming a Dallas fan (or vice versa, to be fair)… that’s just Buddadamn crazy-talk, my friend. Have you, by chance, added a new plant to your Master Meals Plan? You been tokin’ it up, there, Bingo? :)
Mike,
Funny, I got me a friend just like that over here. What a Beauty! Same build, same tough attitude (she kicks my Rummy about every four days with profound joy — I had to literally crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees this past Saturday morning after she was done with me), and she even lives in the same style house.
Squats have recently become my most favoritist exercise. My poundage isn’t much to speak, yet, because I had always avoided them in the past (back and knee concerns — old injuries), but now, with my new-found focus on perfect form, I’ve taken the squat nice and slow, with a light weight (at first — it’s goin’ up this week), so I can lock every aspect of the proper form into muscle memory.
I’ve come to love Leg Day. Can’t wait ‘til Wednesday!

The pain. The pain!
Until quite recently I hadn’t stepped into a gym since Jr High School. (By the way, Mr. Diehn, I saw you checking out all those fruity young buttocks when you were handing out towels! Jeez!)
But I did spend a summer building silos a few decades back, and I remember this about sudden increases in muscle activity: the pain Jon is talking about. The “burn” while you’re doing it, the unrelenting pain after. And the increase in muscle mass that follow.
This time around I’m trying to push myself to the limit and just a bit beyond (“failure” as Jingo refers to it in The Big Book, Fit Over 40). Problem is, I’m not feeling the “burn” too much (you know, that really hot, sore, stretchy, pins-and-needles sensation), not like I used to when I was much younger. Just a sense of weakness, followed the next day by some soreness and tightness. I do think my muscle mass is increasing somewhat, though, by cracky!
Is this a normal thing as one ages? I’m in my mid-40s.

Soreness means never having to say you are sorry. Just beg for it’s forgiveness.
I got back on the treadmill this morning after having dental surgery on friday. It felt pretty good and of course I always feel better after. I am concerned about my energy as I cannot chew for the next 2 months; I have to stay on a soft diet and can only have food that is soft enough to either just be swallowed or pulled apart easily. No fresh vegetables, salads, only fruits in smoothies. Soups are great since I am freezing up here. Any ideas for optimal nutrition in the blender? I can’t have dairy, wheat or yeast and I am vegetarian. Thanx for any help!!
P.S. How was that cold shower, Mike? Great description!

Yesterday i had my body fat tested for the first time ever in my entire life. I did the skinfold testing and really prayed that the result will not be above 30% - I was actually hoping for 25%. The result of the test was 29% of body fat (the person that was taking it said that there is approx 5% error). As a result of that this morining i stepped on the scale and still nothing, no pound down or anything - in the gym i am doing great, weights go up, cardio feels good, nutrition wise I am eating 5 times a day starting with 375cal for the morning and then 300cal during rest of the day.
So now i have few questions.
the body fat percentage - is this normal for my age (i am 32), what is the realistic number that i should be shooting for, about every 6 weeks at a time?
I love my leg workouts as well and the good pain is just wonderful. Maybe it is sickening but i really look foreward to it almost everytime :)
although on my barbell squads i need some work because my shoulder keep on hurting more sometimes than my legs even though i do use padding. It is probably the technique that i have to perfect but it is hard.
hope all of you will have a great day

Tammy,
If you have a powerful blender (I have a Vita-mix) lots of fresh vegetables can be mixed in with your fruit smoothies. When my garden was going this summer I threw in summer squash and cucumbers. Lettuce, carrots and celery also blend well with fruit. If you don’t have a good blender you might find the texture disagreeable.
A sample recipe: 1 c. canned pineapple, 1/4 of an apple, 1/2 of a banna, 1 T. walnuts, 1/2 c. carrots, 1/3 c. celery, 1 large lettuce leaf, 1 large spinach leaf, 1 T. rasins, 1 small sprig parsley, 1 cup ice cubes. Blend until smooth. This makes 3 servings of 114 cal. each so adjust. Throw in something for protein (I use cottage cheese but I’m sure there are dairy alternatives) and have a complete meal.

Hi Guys
Tammy, had a crush on a girl in high school with that name so I probably already love you. The shower was good. I fibbed though. Can’t stand cold so it was hot. I too have a Vita-mix and they are worth every penny. They have a lot of recipes in the book you get with it and on their site as well. I enjoy home made peanut butter on apple or banana. Yea to veg head. I haven’t consumed meat willingly for around 11 years now.
Anna not sure what you have read so forgive me if I am stating what you already know, body weight isn’t the issue right? It’s the ratio of lean muscle mass to fat. If the scale doesn’t change that doesn’t necessarily mean any bad as muscle weighs more than fat. I have my wife pinch me with the calipers weekly and I enter that amount in a table I created along with my body weight and it does the rest for me. This includes telling me how many calories and the break down for the next week. One worksheet for my wife and one for me allowing for differences like her 5 meals to my 6 and so on. The Bingo’s tight pants idea is cool and it will do. I just do everything over the top. Are the calipers supposed to make me bleed every single time? Maybe the wife is just mean. If she used the calipers instead of the scissors it might be better. Hmmm!
Joe Please come join us. Get some sweating going.
Now then I got home from work today and did a workout. As mentioned I have been sick with Bingo knows what. Bingo lord, tomato tomotto, entrepreneur grave robber what ever. So chest and back day and I feel good right now. Only the slightest headache. Dear Bingo/god may this please be the end. May I please tend to my body and spend time in my sensuous gym? Shoulders on Thursday if all goes well. If not I will be one nasty ugly dude. It is almost 7:00 PM so time to cut out and crash soon. I often wake around 3:00 AM and work on my book or other projects I have on the go. So good night all. Bingo, say hi to the very lovely superb trainer Jan for me.

Ok, Jon, I need more info on your qigong device. I have knee issues too. I have just started round 2 of M-Power and Jan has pulled one day of cardio and upped my weights. ( By the way, for those of you who have not signed on, M-Power rocks. I was very diciplined already, with both nutrition and workouts, but I have made more progress in the past 3 mo. than I had on my own. Jan tweaked my nutrition and workouts in a way that really made the difference) But I am doing squats, starting slow, and my knee…. we’ll see how it goes.

thanks a lot for all the advice.
I have calculated my lean mass and came up with 112lbs. so my ideal weight comes up to be 141 lbs.
I am just starting so I will keep on testing and hopefully I will see the results.
When I looked at the numbers that are corresponding with the body fat percentage and it turns out that i am in a poor health, which is surprising because I don’t feel it. I feel great - so what the heck is the deal with all the numbers???
I am following the 1500 calorie nutrition plan and i do my meals and calculate all my little numbers etc. but still the jean test is not really working.
I have been this size and this weight for 4 years now - Now i bought the loose the fat fit the muscle and that is why i am trying to do this and stay committed etc.
Do you think that for me the 1500 calorie is ok for me and maybe i should get lower.
I just thought that since you are so knowledgable you might be able to advice me more. I would really appriciate it.
thank you

help O wonderous and wise Bingo and anyone else who can shed some light. I have the worst possible body type ( i.e the one that you have to do the maximum to see any miniscule results) and I swear ( well I try not to but you know…)that the whole of my body fat percentage is on my upper (read between knee and thigh) legs at the moment and vishnuit I want it gone NOW ! I have been working out between 5 and 6 days on average cardio, weights pilates etc… but it stubborn real stubborn . So I want to make sure I am doing the right things ( I know you can’t spot reduce and I am watching my eating ) Thing is what is most effective . Actually I think what I really want to know is will it go….. By the way that 5 and 6 days is a week not all up. It has been 3 months since I first hit the gym with real intent.

Hi Anna
I would need to know your body fat percentage, total body weight and activity level to generate a calorie starting point. But I think you have done that. So next is to determine what you are eating and the frequency. For the genetic wonders of the universe this is 5 times a day every few hours. For the square hairy grunting folks it is 6 times a day. We get more in order to grow all that hair. Now then the number of calories should only be a starting point. This is why I get pinched weekly. My sheet has a section where I enter the 3 measuring sites, the sheet adds those up. I take the total and look up my youthful good looking age of 40 and that gives me the body fat percentage. I enter the percentage in the magical table and I can now see my fat/lean amounts. I watch those two numbers carefully. If fat goes down and lean goes up I do this whole dance thing that should be better performed while clothed. If fat drops and lean drops I need to increase the food slightly because the body is using muscle for fuel, not good. If fat goes up and lean goes up then I need to take the bell off or crawl out of the pen and reduce the amounts at meal time. The upshot here dearest Anna is change is not only good but necessary. There is also that whole changing mixing of the fat, carbs, protein as well. Let’s not forget to see what we are doing in the gym. Are we maximizing our efforts? Have we written our goals? All the stuff that is in that book. I can’t stress enough that FOF and Burn the Fat are the best books I have read, the M-Power program brings everything I ever knew together in such a usable way. And no I didn’t know of Jon Bingo Benson prior to this program. I sure admire him for having the intelligence and wisdom for doing it though. The amount of information that I have also learned is great. If possible get it on the payment plan as I did. I can’t imagine who would not benefit from this program.
You also asked what is the deal with all the numbers. Everybody here and throughout the world listen to this. If you can pinch an inch you are medically obese. Medically obese means that you are at increase risk for so many ugly diseases such as the big C, sweet blood thang, ticker problems and on and on. They even can categorize what diseases you are likely to get based on if you are an apple or pair shape. Even though you may feel healthy and get few colds … you can’t know what is going on inside until it is too late. A dear college professor and good friend just died on Saturday. He did so much for so many behind the scenes, a hero in my mind. He was the same age as my parents 65. That is ridiculously young given what we know today.
If I may be somewhat candid here I am a very sexual person. When I and lean the difference is terrific and when my partner is lean and has that nice layer of muscle wow! I don’t care if she is tall or short or just about anything else. That would explain why she locked me out of the gym right? Probably needs a rest. Haha I truly love the female human body when it is in great condition. When it is not, as I am a hands on kind of guy it may not be as good as it could be.
Jon shut me down if I am getting too detailed here.
The Mike out for another day I will check in this evening.

My body type might be like yours, at least regarding fat storage places, and my experience has been that it is possible to get that stubborn fat off (ask Jon about the Chinese Bamboo Tree theory). However you will along the way have to decide really and truly how much this body fat bothers you, because most likely losing it will result in loss of fat in precious other places first, like for example your face. Then you have to decide if keeping it off is more important than having a bit more fat in those other places and having to continuously watch your nutrition like a hawk. After having achieved a relatively low bodyfat level, I realized I did not like the total look it gave me - but I am thrilled to be able to say I did once achieve that level!
Obviously it’s your own decision and something you should nevertheless strive for, as you won’t know what it’s like until you’ve been there.

First of all sorry about your friend.
second of all i must say that you are one funny guy.
As per my measurments they are 29% body fat,
my weight 159lbs, lean body mass works out to be 112.8 lbs and the true ideal weight targeting 20% body fat should be 141 lbs.
as per my workouts I do the 2 days on 1 day off. I do my cardio 5 times a week 40min at a time and on my off day i do 55 min of cardio.
as per my nutrition I figured that I should around 1622 cal to start loosing weight but i figured also that i should start more moderately (since for me 1500 cal is just right if not a bit too much at this time) so I am on 1500 calories with 124 grams of protein per day .
so there you have it.
Part of me starts to think that i should be increasing my cardio but honestly how much can you do?? I have a job and i am on my feet all day long running back and forth ( i work in the hospital) - one would think that all this should result in some improvements. Not that i am not improving because like i said before in the gym i am doing great and my workout are awsome and i do see some improvement in my appareance when i stand naked in front of the mirror - yep i see the nice definition and all - I just want to get down from size 10 to 7 so i can feel comfortable and sexy.
I appriciate your input - thanks a bunch

Kinda way Off-Topic….
I’m pumping away on the Elliptical last night (no, I’m talkin’ about the exercise equipment) and I looked around the upper deck of the Phytness Center at all the other people pumping away on their elllipticals or ham-slamming on the treadmills. What a lot of energy was being expended, just in this one spot! At least 100/cal per hour X about 50 people, you do the math. Multiply that by all the fitness centers across the country, it’s a lot of power.
Then, non-sequiter, I ran across this website which, among other interesting facts, says that “…approximately 10 calories of fossil fuel are required to produce every 1 calorie of food eaten in the U.S.” I suspect that the food they’re talking about is highly processed, older labor-intensive agricultural practices probably wouldn’t require so much energy. (Many other interesting things on this site, its basic message is that oil is running out and when it does our way of life is gonna change. Good stuff!)
So I’m looking around the fitness center watching chubbers on their machines trying to lose weight (like me!), weight that was the result of eating too much food, foood which was produced using too much oil, which is running out.
I found that somewhat ironic.
If there were only some way for equipment manufacturers to come up with a standardized way of converting this fitness-activity-related muscle energy into electrical energy (like adding small generators and regulators to equipment ), there’d be at least enough juice added to the national grid to power a few light bulbs, or broadcast reruns of Dr. Phil to Cuba. A bit farfecthed, but an interesting mental exercise.
Another way-off-topic topic: Anyone see the Discover documentary this week called “The 750-Pound Man”? The dude hadn’t moved from his couch in over 7 years. He was moved to a nursing home for xTrEeEEM bariatric help, and the first thing he did when he got there was send a nice salad plate back to the kitchen with a demand for hamburgers. Had relatives sneak him bags of chips and candies. He had to be weighed in using a whale sling. The extent of his denial was incredible…claimed he was getting better every day and was working really hard at it, while the tray table at his bedside was mounded with snack food warppers.
Then he died.
I would find that ironic, too, if it wasn’t so sad.

Hello Anna
My heart picked up a bit at that whole standing before the mirror bit. I am getting in to that gray area here as this is the Jon man’s yap. Not that my hair is gray you understand or if it is they all won’t tell me the truth. I would rather that he responded to this so at the risk of getting my precious little fingies wrapped I will say the following. By my chart I show we agree that 141 is ideal at 20% body fat. I show you should be consuming a higher amount, daily of around 1800 cals. Most important is over five meals. That 5 meals per day starting upon waking. Protein at each meal and end the day with mostly veggies. If it comes in a package don’t put it in your body. Can we hear the sounds of processed foods equaling empty useless calories and huge chemicals? Go back to basics, foods in their natural state. Anyone can debate the various eating craze of the day but the one thing I don’t think anyone rational can argue with is eating food as it was grown is bad. True I am a vegetarian however I don’t have a problem with others eating meat I just won’t do it. If you must eat meat make it clean meat. Meaning not processed sandwich meat. Get organic if possible. Same with the veggies. The water consumption thing has been dealt with, drink it. Avoid sugar and all flower. It’s about the same thing once in your body. What is flower? Extremely processed wheat. How good can that be? Brown rice not white, lot of beans, lentils and whole grains.
You stated you workout 2 days on 1 day off. I assume these 2 days are weight training? I believe that working a muscle group once a week is plenty. So 4 days a week at the weights should be enough. I don’t think it appropriate for me to go in to any sort of plan as Jon has covered that quite nicely in previous days here. Make your cardio sessions shorter and very intense at least some of them. Also recognize that your body type might just mean that you will burn the fat but over a longer amount of time. That’s ok too. Now then back to that whole mirror thing again? How did you say you were dressed?
Hope something here was helpful. Good night Anna and all.

Yes sir, it’s a great and strange feeling all at the same time. I love it, actually. I’m accustomed to living close to that state almost all the time in ‘some’ body part, but this was over-the-top. Then again, I’ve never taken a year off leg training before.
I get to hit ‘em again tomorrow…fun! ; )
To Todd:
No one likes you very much.
Did I mention that I rewind the Theisman/L.T. play on a weekly basis when I need a quick joy boost?
: )
Oh, I guess I should NOT mention that certain game next week, right? Oh man, I love a good rivalry!
To Greg:
Who the farg is “Jingo”? Are you trying to anger the volcano gods?
Cracky — yep, joints do that as you age. However, I’ve had knees that have done that since 18, so it’s hardly “age” age. Fats (coconut oil, cod liver oil, fish oil) really help. Unless there’s pain, it’s pretty harmless.
To Tammy:
Hell, I never ask forgiveness for something I requested!
Wow…tough question. “Soft” diet for a vegetarian. Hmmm. I would grab Jack Lallane’s juicer and try his veggie/fruit recipes. Mix in some soy (or preferably whey) protein and a bit of flax oil to balance the meals.
To Anna:
Curious: if no one told you that “30% was bad”, would you have dreaded the outcome?
Expectations.
Now, whether you’re 60% or 20%, it doesn’t matter — your goal is simply ONE PERCENT PER MONTH. You’ll do more probably, but so what if you don’t? Let’s say you’re 30% — what would you be in 12 months? 18%!! At 18%, you’re a lean machine for a woman — not ripped, but very fit.
See how easy that sounds if you set reasonable expectations?
There’s no such thing as a “realistic” body fat percentage for an age — ideal for any age is your objective. For a female, 10-20% is a good “wide” range. 10 is ripped and not recommended for long periods of time. 20% is a bit soft, but pretty fit. My personal preference is 12-15% for women; 6-10% for men — and that’s TOP shape. A few percentage points here and there for “good” shape.
If your weights are going up, and this is the first time you’ve tested the body fat, how do you know this isn’t muscle!? Test again in a month. How does the waistline feel?
Trust me — if you need to reduce your kcals a bit, you’ll know it — but you sound balanced. It takes time to get your body into the groove — be patient, my friend.
NO — nothing is “sickening”, and you cannot use that lingo ‘round these parts — unless you have the ebola virus or something.

To Ginger:
Fantastic! Glad to hear you’re having such success with M-Power.
The qigong device: go to www.cheeenergy.com. That’s where you’ll find “The X LIght.” Trust me…killer device.
To Vincent:
Just plain old magnesium — as in “not” aspartate, primarily! Sorry for the confusion mate.
To Janine:
Your last sentence answers your own question. : )
“Stubborn” fat will release — and it does take time and mental energy to make that happen, but it will happen. It will NOT happen, ever, without intensity — so just step up that intensity and consistency and watch.
To Mike:
Me too — and never shall I silence. : )
To Greg:
I emailed the guy on that site — interesting stuff. My blog on “Shedding Fat for Oil” seemed to resonate with him.
Until we get off the oil standard, we will have a major problem with ‘all things’ that involve our future, let alone our waistlines. However, we need a politician who is not a Rummy (literally and Bingo-ly) and who will lead the way despite threat of assassination.
That 750-pound man was just a 750-pound nut case. He could have been 150-pounds and he would have still been a nut case. Bent on self-destruction is one thing — taking joy in it is another.
To Mike:
Thanks so much for the wonderful advice to all — and for being as witty as you are helpful!
