Reflections of a 77 Year Old Bodybuilder

Editor’s Note: The following is a frank but wonderful article by the “Ageless Wonder” herself, Kelly Nelson. I love Kelly’s take on life in general. Not only is she committed, she’s fearless. That fearlessness comes out in the way she writes. Brace yourself!
On Training
Here are some of my thoughts on weight training; hopefully they will help to keep those that exercise regularly on track, and those that don’t to stop being victims of their own excuses! Remember, the hardest part is opening your door…and then the door to the gym.
Sure, you can train at home, and I do that sometimes, but unless one is a self motivator and knows exactly what and how to do the exercise, it would be confusing. But home training is great for the beginner to get started as outlined in our training video, found on our website. Visit www.agelesstraining.com to order.
You will need 40 minutes of time without the telephone or any family distractions.
I cycle my workouts, and split my body into chest, delts, triceps and abdominals on day one, day two is back, biceps, calves. I like to take day three off from the gym and do an easy bike ride, weather permitting. Day four is quadriceps, hamstrings, abdominals and calves. Off on day five.
Those first three days are past paced, supersetting. I have my equipment set up for what I want to do and go at a speed that keeps my heart rate accelerated. Weight training can be aerobic, and that is the purpose of these first three days. I do twelve reps per set and four exercises per body part.
On day five,I do an upper body workout using more weight and less sets. reps in the seven to eight range. Day six is lower body and same sets and reps as day five. I take two days off from weight training and do some biking. Day nine is my power day and I do the big lifts, standing barbell press, barbell bench press, deadlifts, pull ups, dips, and push ups. I go for three sets x 5-3-1. I always feel strong on the power day because of the volume of prep work in the beginning of the cycle.
I have not deviated from this cycle in 20 years; however I sometimes reverse the order of the exercises and I look for ways to do the exercises in a different way. For instance, the change can be subtle; wider or narrower stance and grip. Instead of doing a hack squat on the hack machine, I face backwards,; my stomach against the back rest. I especially like Tom Venuto’s Forgotten Exercises, and I try them all.
On Cosmetic Surgery
I feel I have earned every wrinkle and carry them quite well. However, I have breast implants and have had them since 1968. This had nothing to do with wearing a posing suit. I grew up in the voluptuous era and I think I was the only one in those awful open school showers for the whole P.E. class that had only nipples!
One day in 1966, I was reading an article in a woman’s magazine that this implant procedure was being done. I immediately contacted a surgeon in my area. I had to wait six months for an appointment, then another year for the surgery, as there was a long waiting list. The cost was $1000.00. I have never been sorry. It changed me on the inside more than the outside.
My latest experience with a cosmetic lift was two years ago when I had Botox injections for my frown lines. The doctor over injected and for the next three months my frown lines were gone, but my eyebrows looked like they were meeting my hairline. I understand that the cost is figured per unit and she used 45 units; a lot for my little face. I learned that I was not a good candidate for Botox. Never again.
On Sex
Some people do and some don’t. If we listen to the Viagra® ads, the media is telling us that sexual activity goes on and on. If one was sexually active at 20, then they should be at 70-100. The supplement companies have sold billions of so called aphrodisiacs, so there must be something to it.
How much sex should we have ? None, if you don’t want it. I guess a lot of people don’t, and just as many that do. If an older woman does not have a husband, or possibly if she does but sex does not exist in the marriage and she still wants it, she has to go looking; sex mostly does not come looking for her. Between fifty and sixty, sex is out there; if you are so inclined you can connect. After sixty, you have to supply the sled, the snow and the dog team!
But don’t most women want love, companionship, intimacy much more than sex? Most certainly, and if there is a man in your life at all, we have all of those. Some of us, once we are past puppyhood, have finally got it through our heads that a man has other things on his mind than sex. Sex, after his puppyhood is over too, is pretty heavy duty stuff. He cannot indulge sexually like a guppy going for the flake of food in an aquarium; he has to ration.
In 1996, I was in a stage production in New York, and was one of three Aphrodite’s (the goddess of love). There was a 20 year old and a 40 year old and myself. The narrator told of each ones love powers. When he came to me, as I walked on stage he said, “At 65 a woman knows where she has been and finally knows the purpose of her being. What about all of her other sensibilities other than sexual powers? Sex does not make her unique. It is the least unique aspect of a woman. Her uniqueness lies in dozens of other attractive ways.”
You begin to realize that love is more than mere sex, and certainly much more than coitus.
Kelly Nelson did not even start weight training until she was 53 years old, with no athletic background what so ever! This is a lifestyle and a passion for her, as well as her daughter Colleen, with whom she trains and competes. Kelly is also an avid bicyclist, cross country skier, and has a deep love of the animal world, which is reflected in her vegetarianism lifestyle.
