The Awful Truth About Love Handles
Who the heck thought it would be “cute” to call the most dreaded of fat for men… the fat around the belt line…love handles?
Who I ask you?
There is nothing to love about these suckers. In fact during my less patient moments I’ve considered the kitchen knife and a rapid call to 911.
I’m kidding, but it can be that … well… frustrating… anger-causing…just a real pain in the butt.
I bet you can relate to stubborn bodyfat. Most of us “genetic normies” can.
That’s the awful truth: Love handles are not loving and they have a vice- like grip on your sides.
The good news is … there’s more than a few things you can do….make love handles bite the dust.
That’s right — give them back to Cupid.
Here’s 3 tips…
- 1. Love handles are the last bit of fat to go on a male due to the fact that the structure of the fat is geared toward long- term energy use. Therefore you have to turn your body into a fat-burning machine rather than a carbohydrate-burning machine. To start, reduce your dependance upon carbohydrates. Go low-carbs (20-50 grams per day) for three days followed by higher carbs (up to 300 grams) on day four, then repeat. This not only staggers your carbs, but also your calories. This is crucial to continual fat-burning.
- 2. Stop drinking diet sodas. They have been shown to trigger fat storage…ready?… in the belly and love-handle areas. You just can’t fool your fat.
- 3. Hit morning cardio and/or weight training before eating anything. Take only 5 amino acids and 5 grams of L-Glutamine prior along with a cup of coffee if your doctor allows. You will burn more bodyfat using this technique.
I’ve been using Tribustol Plus to help with building lean muscle and burning body fat. It is an extremely impressive supplement… the first I have promoted by brand in my entire career. The link above is a direct non-affiliate link to the site.
Try the stuff for yourself.

Hi Jon,
I am 13 and have been really into fitness and nutrition for the last year and a half. I would like to get rid of my love handles and get six-pack abs like you. I have a faint six-pack but I am slightly ‘skinny-fat’. Would you recommend your low-carb diet and 7-minute muscle program for me?

Jon, you with love handles……hmm and here I thought you were a perfect 10…
I’m getting closer and closer to losing those rascals and yes I even see a hint of ab showing through.
On the Tanita scale (not really accurate but gives me relative progreessive feedback) I’m right at 8 % BF.
Nice to see you on this site again.

Sam,
At 13, your hormones are at a state to where low-carb dieting, or any dieting for that matter unless your doctor okays it, could be risky.
My best advise would be to cut out most of the junk food carbs all but a few times a week and continue what you’re doing assuming it’s cool with the powers that be (i.e. your folks. ; )

Thanks very much Jon. I really appreciate advice from such a distinguished expert as yourself. Would it still be alright for me to follow your 7 minute muscle workouts?

Hi Sam,
Thanks for the kind words.
Again, if your folks say it’s cool to train, then by all means — 7 Minute Muscle is by far the best way to train for younger people who frankly have better things to do with their time than spend an hour every day in the gym. Plus you’re getting external exercise as well just by being younger.
Just be sure to ask your folks about the training. Legally I cannot advice someone with specifics who is under 18. It’s just the way it is, and I think that’s wise in ‘some’ cases, ridiculous in others.
Anyway, I started at 14, but didn’t do much with it until I got to college, but I had my mom and dad’s okay. It is always smart to get parental consent if you’re under 18 as they may have issues with weight training.
Thanks Sam, and keep us posted.

Oh, and Sam… nice poetry. I write myself. Are you sure you’re only 13? That’s some good stuff. Keep it up… one day you may be published.

Hi Jon,
Thanks so much for your advice. My folks are cool with it as long as i’m not doing too much. As you can see poetry is another of my interests and I’m so flattered you read my poems. Keep up your great work too.
p.s I’m 14 in april

No worries Sam… I’ve been a poet myself since college. I’ve been published once… want to get my entire UNION series published for real. Not easy, unless you do it yourself. I’ve considered that route as obviously I have experience, but I have no idea how many folks on my list would care to hear my musings about love and truth. : )
If your folks are cool with your training, then share the routine with them. I think they will appreciate the safety factor (i.e. you can do this without a spotter if you use the right equipment). Plus it prevents the teenage ego thing I suffered from:
“Let’s see how much I can lift today to impress XYZ chick…”
( Oh, okay… that really never goes away, but 7MM tames the beast within. )

Jon,
Sorry to send you yet another question, I know you must probably be really busy but my folks just wanted to know exactly what you meant by ‘you can do this without a spotter if you use the right equipment’ (maybe you can’t legally advise me on this) . What equipment would be necessary for the program e.g how heavy should the weights be?

It’s no bother Sam… I answer about 400 emails a day and I enjoy speaking with everyone, especially people just getting started.
“Without a spotter” — in 7MM there’s an exercise substitution list that removes the movements that demand a second person to watch over you in case the weights get to heavy.
Bench presses, for example, are substituted (or in your case should be) for dumbbell presses, Smith Machine presses, etc. Same with squats.
It’s just a safety issue, mainly because it takes about 2-3 weeks to narrow down the exact weights you should be using. Most of the time people shoot to high. They think the weight feels too light at the start of the Power and/or Mass Phase and next thing you know they are needing help for just one repetition.
We never want that — we want safety and to never train to absolute failure or used forced repetitions.

Cheers Jon,
I’d just like to say thanks for helping me and inspiring me. It’s so nice to know that the person behind the book is a real person that you can talk to. I used to be quite a chubby child but instead of just trying to be healthy and exercising more I became anorexic, losing a lot of muscle in the process. Then once I was over that and stick-thin, I gorged myself on fattening foods to undo it. I’ve been trying to get back on track over the last 6 months and get a body that I feel comfortable in , yo-yo dieting whilst going to the gym a lot (I am quite muscular and lean now but the process has been pretty painful). With your advice I realise that I shouldn’t be dieting and I don’t need to overexercise to be fit.
I’ll let you know how I’ve progressed with 7MM in a few months.
Thanks again
Sam

To Sam:
Thanks a million Sam for the kind words. Keep me posted… and while I’m at it, let me say this to anyone else reading this blog:
There IS a very real person behind these books.
But I have had a year of being so busy and distracted with stuff that I have not been as accessible as I normally am. I’m working very hard to change that and balance it so I can physically get it done ( 1,000 emails a day is a bit of a challenge ) while still working, having a life, etc.
I missed the connection with everyone last year and vowed to not let that happen again, but there is some tech we need to build in order to make it work for 7 (about to be 10) different products.
Hang with me until then… hit me up on Facebook (just search for Jon Benson) or here, or email jon@jonbenson.com. Anything my staff cannot answer is ‘always’ forwarded to me and always answered (unless it’s lost in email, hence the tech stuff we need.)
Thanks again.
To Vicky:
The supplement Vicky is asking about is found here:
http://www.tribustolplus.com
Is it safe? Absolutely safe unless you are pregnant, then very few supplements of this nature are safe. If you are unsure, always ask your doctor first. The ingredients (unlike many supplements) are listed on the website.
Again, I do NOT own this product. I have no stock in the company. It’s just a great product produced by a very good friend who I trust implicitly. Plus I take it.

Hello Jon: I read with interest the above blog on ‘love handles’. What interests me most are these products on the market for performance supplements, weight loss assistance etc. I work out, hard, 4-5 x/week and rely on my own cooking to provide my body with the fuel and nutrition required. I don’t count calories, however, try to eat clean and healthy as much as possible. I have not tried any supplements and frankly am not sure I should. However, I am interested to know more as the whole subject/industry is rather confusing and overwhelming to me. I might be persuaded to take something provided I am sure it was benefiting my long-term health such as vitamins reportedly do (which I don’t take either).
Can you tell me why, if one should eat properly and get all necessary vitamins daily, would one need these fat burning, performance and mood enhancing supplements at all, natural or not?
Interested in your response.
Regards,
Sheryl Oldfield (fit after 40!!)
