The new 10

Greetings all…and happy Bingomas to you.

It’s not really my birthday, but Christmas isn’t Jesus’ birthday either, so…THERE.

Now, give me stuff.

Anyway, here’s a brief but important blog for you all — 10 is going in a different direction. Read on…

Good dog….sit, Ubu, sit….

Who the hell names a dog “Ubu”?

Now, the new 10: I’m considering the following, since I want to make a blog that everyone spreads around like a nasty virus that kills millions in a bloody massacre like a good stock tip. One that delivers these elements:

  1. The original 10-in-10 Challenge blogs. These are important for newbies who want to start at the beginning;
  2. The continued emphasis on “10 in 10” — that will never change. That goal should be tattooed on your forehead in case you forget it;
  3. More ha-has from your favorite (albeit now “controversial” ‘cause I said naughty-naughtys about W) fitness humorist;
  4. And…the new stuff…specific weekly fitness articles and contributions from others.

The difference is really the emphasis on building a free blog that dishes some fitness-heavy articles and factoids. I’ll figure out a way to divide each week’s posting (probably 2 or so a week) into categories. That way you can skip the ha-has if your easily offended, or what-have-you.

Such a nice guy I am.

Now, here’s the deal: I’m going to make this site a serious people only zone. Meaning: you have to share this with others if you want the freebies.

Just like “Scale The World”, btw…share and you can play, or scram.

So…what do you think? Any loyalists out there willing to play along? {10}

WEll, Jon,
I still wanna be here, but i have this thing about unsolicited email. I don’t mind the odd ad myself, but I know it freaks people out, what with the possibility of viruses etc.Finding people to send STW to was hard enough, I simply don’t collect email addresses.(mark of the chronically disorganised. Got a vitamin for that?) Also people can take offence ‘Are you saying I’m FAT!!’ that kind of thing. I do tell people about the site directly ‘word of mouth’ as the ad agencies say. Would that be acceptable?
Oh I did have an idea, while I was missing you. Why not have guest bloggers to take the pressure off? I was thinking of your core followers here, or of course fitness fellows. You could farm questions out to the Mpower personal trainers. Lastly to save those precious fingers, have you considered talking software. We’ve tried Dragon, and I hear Naturally Speaking is good. We’ve had that working quite well at times. Lately I have been thinking of a digital voice recorder. I understand some models let you store the file on your computer and play with it there. Don’t know if anyone has managed to turn the recording into text yet. Wouldn’t that be something? Of couse you could farm out the recording to a secretary for typing.
Oh wish me luck, I sent in a job application. I ‘m not officially unemployed, just using my leave up until that inevitable day. The job includes a lot of active outdoors stuff, I couldn’t have considered 3 months ago, but now I ‘m looking at it with considerably less tripidation.
Bye

Keep up the great job Jon.

Clare;

This is not unsoliticed email. If you define sending a friend a referral to something you enjoy as “unsolicited”, then sending anyone ‘anything’ is unsolicited! No viruses — that’s on the server side of things and we cannot operate without hourly sweeps.

Paul;

I was a major contributor to Draper’s IOL fourm in years past. Dave has some great stuff, and classic pictures too. Thanks for referring people there…it’s a wonderful group of people (for the most part — I departed because one particular asswipe decided to play Mr. Christian and tattle on me for spam— didn’t even do it. Someone else posted a glowing review of Fit Over 40 and a thread was started…he said I was posting under another name) but hey…stuff happens.

Jon speak to me/us..I have questions. Questions about physiques, leaness, fat, endurance. I respect Clarence B. and Dave D. they really have dialed in their techniques. Although I would not use them as vision of what I want for myself. Clarence makes me squimish..too many veins popping..too much grease..I guess to lean for me..as much as I admire Dave he seems to be a freak of nature.. too big not graceful, fluid, silky just monstrous big,although I think his proportion..muscle to bone structure is better than Clarence. From the pictures I’ve seen of you and of Clark ..your bodies have better proportion and a more natural look..more streamlined..perhaps a slight layer of fat. The look that you have.. is it because of the individual(you) or is it a training and nutrition regime?..or both? Can you elaborate on this for me. Tell me about the endurance of someone that is ultra lean. Do they have long lasting power. I am a long distance endurance runner and wonder about becoming very lean..most of us that do well in races are not the Calrence Bass lean.When I am running a 50K or 50 mile run I snack on the usuall running foods for some energy but if you don’t have some reserve on the body you’ll crash and burn. This blog thing is difficult for me to completely express myself..hopefully you get a little of what I’m trying to say.

Thanks, Paul

Paul (and all);

Both Clarence and Dave are very lean and extremely vascular. Clarence is carrying about 4-6% body fat max. The lowest I’ve ever been is 6.5%, and Clark is about 6-7% year-round.

Bear in mind that the look you’re talking about can only be maintained for a short period of time — literally hours. I would not concern yourself with “ending up” like that, as it’s a pain in the Rummy to even get close to it!

Someone that lean has little endurance in comparison to someone between 6-10% body fat.

1. Do what you love;

4. Burn the record that that line comes from;
5. Share more with others than they expect;
6. Make a series of damn good products;

I find this exercise breaks down the barriers:

Ask them if they can shed a pound of fat in a month. Just one. That’s all you are asking.

Now, that means they will have to consume a whopping 115 calories less per day than they do now. That’s about a slice of toast, a cola…nothing.

“Oh, well…yeah. I can do that.”

Great — then ask them if they would rather be 12 pounds lighter body-fat-wise in a year, or a few pounds heavier?

There you go — you just developed a plan to discard 12 useless pounds in a year VERSUS GAINING 2-10 pounds. Those are your options — you will not stay “the same” if you’re most people.

“That’s not enough.”

Great…how about 24 pounds? Cut 250 calories out…or just walk 3 miles a day and keep that 115 calorie deficit.

Anyone can do this — what they’re saying is this: “I want it tomorrow, and I can’t have it.” THAT is the only reason “it doesn’t work” — the only reason.

Keep pluggin girl!

Hi Jon, Beautiful day here in N. Calif.

I just got the Fit Over 40 newsletter. Since I did’nt know where to email you directly I thought I would comment here regarding the 10 minute cardio article. I was a long and slow cardio guy until I read about Dr. Tabata and his study at the Institute of Health and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. For the last 5 weeks I have been “doing” the Tabata Protocol. I have to say it is one of the most radical and important moves I have made. It played a major part in getting me below the 10 % BF point. Increased VO2 max and talk about discarding fat..wow! Rather than a 30 to 60 minute workout on the eliptical trainer I now warm up for 5 minutes then 8 sets of 20 second all out max with 10 second recovery between those 20 second bursts. cool down for another 3 to 5 minutes and the entire work out is done in under 15 minutes. I have tried other HIIT methods but by far this one gives you the most bang for the buck. For those of you that are interested and want more details check out articles 10 and 11 at cbass.com.

I now am weight training 2 days per week (rather than 4) and applying the same HIT principle and getting great results. I think that is where you are headed with the 7 minute workout..if we ever see it..(just kiddin).

Have a great day

Paul

I’m in response mode today, but look for a new blog this weekend.

First, the Tabata protocol is really effective for some people. Bill Phillips kinda stole…er…borrowed (that’s okay, we all do it) this research and formed “HIIT” out of it.

However, the 10 minute cardio I mentioned in the newsletter is really far less brutal. This is an intermediate-zone cardio (65-75% intensity) only — really.

Basically the thought is (a) cardio primarily burns calories and (b) the “after-burn” of cardio is overrated when compared to weight training.

Bottom line — 10 minute sessions (Len does them 3-6x/day) really do work well.

Lastly, 7MM is not HIT — trust me. : ) Not even close.

I’ve been following the 7 Minute Muscle protocol for two weeks now. Unfortunately, I haven’t been seeing the results I had hoped for.

Maybe I’m doing it wrong?

1) I go to the gym and wait in line to sign in. Time: 1 minute.
2) Go to the locker room and wait for some sweaty guy to get his butt off the bench so I can change. Time: 4 minutes.
3) I wait for a bench in Free Weight Zone. Time: 5 minutes.
4) I excercise with free weights. Time: 2 minutes.
5) I wait for the calf extension machine. Time: 4 minutes.
6) I use the calf machine. Time: 1 minute.
7) I wait for a treadmill. Time: 16 minutes.
8: I use the treadmill. Time: 4 minutes, until I realize that I have to rush out and pick up the kids at school.

Total exercise time: 7 minutes.

I hope the book adresses some of these problems.

Over the last several years I’ve purchased equipment piece by piece and now have a fairly decent set up. The hours are excellent too..I’m usually in there around 4:30 am..finish up.. go have breakfast then get the kids, my wife and all the livestock fed.. etc….

Still pumped up the tyres, went back to my old distance, and moved up to heavier weights. how are you all going?

G’day, Clare…

Greetings from the other side of the International Date Line (and the Equator)!

Weekend here, too. If I walk out my front door and look 30 miles south, toward downtown Dallas, I can see a plume of busy smoke rising from the location of Bingo’s Workshop. Bingo Claus and his elves must be working hard down there, maybe they’re making a new blog. Or 7 Minute Muscle!

Funny story about your bike tires! That happened to my son the last time we went out for a ride. It certainly can increase the difficulty of your workout, but think of all the new muscle tissue you’re adding!

Nobody’s reported results here in a while so I’d like to get the ball rolling:

-Valentine’s Day was a very bad thing. It’s also my wife’s birthday. Just had to get a cake. This year I got a small 1/8-sheet cake instead of the usual full sheet, so at least it only lasted for one day instead of lurking around the kitchen for three. And there was lots of chocolate in the house. I added three lbs early last week but have since shed two of them.

-Since the first 10in10 I’ve gone down 18 lbs. Three of those have been in the second round. Funny how the weight loss gets slower the closer you come to your goal.

I am having a difficult time convincing myself that spending only 20 minutes on the treadmill is enough each day to achieve cardiovascular benefits and help tone my legs. I feel like if I don’t think I could last 45 minutes all at once that it is not worth it to do it at all. How do I change this mindset? I was also wondering what some very effective bun toning and shaping exercises are besides squats and lunges which I am not able to do. I am desperate for some as that is the one area that is ‘lagging behind’.

Posted on Feb 21, 2006 08:00 AM

Tammy - have faith! If your 20 minutes on the dreadmill are well spent, you will reap the benefits. I was a skeptic myself (actually, I’m worse than a skeptic, I’m a runner, and we like to run for it’s own sake), and had a hard time buying into the idea that cutting back on my volume would do me ANY good at all. I replaced two longer runs with 20 minute interval runs, and lo and behold, not only did I drop fat (following a good meal plan is key here), but I got faster to boot.

Why can’t you do squats and lunges? Might help someone come up with alternate ideas if they know your physical limitations here.

I live about 600 km south of Cologne. If you need more info, have Jon send you my email address.

The truth and nothing but the truth -

It has been scientifically proven that if we drink 1 liter of water each
day, after one year we will have absorbed 1 kilo of the Escherichia Coli bacteria usually found in feces. In other words, we will have consumed 1 liter of s#@t.
However, we don’t run that risk when we drink beer, whiskey, rum or other liquors because the creation of alcohol involves a distillation process of boiling, filtering and fermenting.
It is my duty to communicate to all of you who are drinking water to stop doing so as it has been scientifically proven that it is unhealthy and therefore bad for you.

Remember:

Water = S#@t
Alcohol = Health

Free yourself of s#@t, drink alcohol!!!
It’s better to drink alcohol and talk s#@t, than to drink water and be
full of s#@t!

I happen to know what Jon was up to over the weekend. Here’s a hint: the shortened form has one syllable and three letters.

heyho Guys,
sure been a dull month without a Jonseye view of the world.Still some of you are hilarious. But who are Lance and Sheryl Paul?
Progress hmmm. well after sticking on the same weight for way too long, my local supermarket came to the rescue and gave me food poisoning last Thursday. Been on those awful salty glucose drinks ever since and yep dropped 3 or 4 kilos. Ate jelly today, oh please let me be on the mend. Went for a job interview yesterday for a cool position where i get to travel about the Northern Territory and promote the Duke of Edinbrough Award.hope i’ve learn to spell that.Unfortunately the only downside is its for a pittance, half my previous salary.ah well you don’t get into social work for the money.Those who did rapidly move into management.
Those locals out there(local to Jon that is) haven’t experienced any power blackouts or flickering have you?. Hope Jon hasn’t fried his circuits trying to upload this gargantuan new work.

Clare - so sorry to hear of your infirmity! It’s impossible to keep from losing muscle mass when you can’t *eat* - but I’m sure you’ll be back on track soon. Keep your chin up.
Lance Armstrong - Cheryl Crow

On the 10 front - I am having a hard time evaluating my progress. I have not lost one pound since January 1st but I feel great. I’m training for my first triathlon at the same time I’m training for a marathon - both in May. I’m eating 2000 cals a day (healthy foods) and doing 2 hours of cardio M-F and 3-6 hours Saturday and Sunday. I’ve lost 1/2 inch off my bum and that’s it. My back and shoulders are getting too tight in some of my cute little spring dresses but I dare not lay off the swim training it’s my weak sport. Hmmmm, dilemma! Do I try to cut back my eating and try to lose that last 10 lbs. of fat or do I fuel for endurance and worry about fat loss later?
