You got lucky: more FAQs

Hey now, I may hit three blogs in a day. While such feats are usually demonstrated by dope-smoking, computer geek slackers, I’m going to restore the good name of, “Hmmm….what to do…”

Here’s a few more FAQs I get. I’m sharing them with you because I had a long day and…well, that’s really it.

Jon, do you have a Ph.D.?

I have four Ph.D.s, as a matter of fact.

Three of them are tied up in my basement, and the fourth…well, let’s just say he didn’t play well with the others and had to be…how do I say this tactfully…made to stand in the now bloody corner.

No, really…it’s a serious question: do you have a Ph.D.?

I forgot.

Oh, for cryin’ out loud man…what’s your problem? Do you have a Ph.D. or not?

No, but I’m still smarter than you and that’s all that really matters, now isn’t it?

I get asked about that “credentials” thing quite a bit. Silly-willy if you asky-wasky me. E.

Wanna know why?

Ready for the answer?

Sure?

Because it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out.

Hey, if I ever send you an email advertising “Jon’s Discount Neurosurgery: Two Heads For The Price Of One”, THEN you can ask me if I have a Ph.D.

Otherwise, bugger off. You know, just like Jacko.

Here’s a partial list of nifty clues:

  • Most docs are fat.
  • Most docs took about 6 hours of nutrition classes in med school. I read more than that in the shower.
  • Most docs are good at treating symptoms and the occasional illness, not preventing them. We nutrition freaks address the problems before they’re problems. We’re like the Pro Choice of Disease…with that being said, no one bomb my loft, okay? M-kay.
  • Above all, you learn best by doing, repeating, and teaching. It’s called mastery, and few docs have the time for such nonsense when it comes to healthy nutrition.

Now then, just for comparison, let me think…I don’t know where my appendix ran off to.

Docs would know that, see? See? See the difference?? GOOD…stop buggin’ me about it, or I’ll take a year out of my life and appease the masses, only to leave you BLOGLESS. You want that? Well, do ya?? That’s right…whose your daddy?

Would you ask a doctor, “Excuse me Doctor Billem, do you have a NUTRITION BLOG?” No…no, you wouldn’t. Good. Doc Billem would think you were certifiable, and then prescribe you a month’s worth of antidepressants and some Lipitor just for the fun of it.

“Lipitor. It’s not just for breakfast anymore.”

New slogan for Pfizer. You like it? Fine…come up with a better one.

I have multiple degrees, none of which I’m using that much….just so you know I’m not a total ignoramus or anything like that dere. But I can get Jared a new body if he’d work with me for six months and lay off the freakin’ Subway garbage. No, I’m cool with Jared. He dropped an entire football team on starchy bread. Good for him. Just don’t tell everyone else it’s thanks to that starchy bread and processed junk…tell em’ the truth. Then take off your shirt.

On second thought…skip the shirt part. Still, good for you Jared. Find a gym now.

Now I do enjoy debating doctors because they’re such poor losers. The ultimate give-away in our debates is usually, “Well…um…YOU’RE not a doctor.”

“And YOU’RE not a Lamborghini, Dr. Billum. But hey, you’re a damn good idiot and our village needs one from what I hear. By the way, what time is your meeting with Pfizer?”

Fun with docs.

I love good docs. Seriously. They are priceless gifts to us. Too bad there’s like, hmmm…27 of them or something. Not nearly enough, that’s for sure. Oh yeah, your GPs, kid has a sore throat, broke my leg, whatever docs are fine and dandy. Just keep doing that stuff and lay off the diet books, okay?

Good. Now that we’ve tackled that subject, on to the next question:

Jon, do you have to be so…abrasive? It’s somewhat offensive at times, but I really am being helped by what you say in-between. Thank you for understanding. — Signed, The Preacher Lady

There really should be two “10” blogs; one that’s rated G and the other that’s just not even worthy of being rated. But, alas, domain names and URLs…what’s a guy to do?

I’ve been known to swear at times, but then again I write poetry. So I can. It comes as a perk. Really…it’s in the charter or something. If you can write well, you are entitled to swear — as long as you swear well. That’s hard.

My suggestion is (a) grow some humor; (b) feed it daily; and (c) if this is not possible, simply substitute “pretty pink roses” for the questionable if not evil locution. So, certain sentences may be rendered, oh, sheesh…just as an example off the top of my head:

“That pretty pink rose Rumsfeld was chairman of the company that approved aspartame. What a pretty pink rose. We should string him up by his pretty pink roses and….”

You get the idea.

Now, we’re all happy. Just don’t forget the “Hail Mary’s if you’re Catholic.

Final question, and this one actually has something to do with something you can use (go figure…):

Jon, I don’t know where to start in my 10 in 10 challenge!

Just tonight I got asked that question on the phone. Very nice lady…but I was on the other line talking to Jan in Taipei.

PETE. Pete. I was talking to Pete in Taipei.

I asked her to call me back, but I think my sexy voice got to her. (I bet she calls me now, yeah?)

Here’s how you start: dump the junk out of your diet. This means processed foods (anything in a box, can, plastic wrapper, made of flour, laced with chemicals and stuff you cannot pronounce.) Start there. Don’t worry about sugar and fat…yet. That will come later. The sugar part. Some of the fat part, but less than you think. Also, know that you can have sugar, just when you want it rather than when your body craves it.

Nuke the chemicals, eat organic foods, and watch what happens to those sugar cravings.

I won’t even mention that the FDA knows about this. God knows I wouldn’t want to stir up controversy.

Crap. I just did, didn’t I?

So, step two is to take these cleaner meals and simply divide them up into smaller portions. Don’t concern yourself with “6 meals a day” right now, unless you’re an athlete and you’ve been on the Rope-a-Dope when it comes to diets. You’re good to go.

Smaller meals stoke the fire, just like kindling. You wouldn’t chunk a big log on a small fire…but you can chunk fat-cat Ph.D.s on a bonfire and they’ll burn just fine.

Or Donald Rumsfeld.

Either works…and yes, I’m joking about the Ph.D.s.

Burn, baby…burn. Don’t dump calories into your system all at once. Spread the love around, people.

Last tip for getting started, then I’m watching God’s Game (go Indy): water, water everywhere. Drink more water than a rebellious camel. Drink until you think your den is your bathroom, and hopefully not vice-versa.

Drink.

Water is crucial to fat-burning. Why? Read my past blogs and dig it up. Or I’ll tell you later. For now, the Colts are about to score. Enjoy your evening, and if you know any more Ph.Ds who are easily lured into basements, do let me know.

Oh, yeah…my nutrition is still rockin’…bye-bye belly fat. {10}

Hi Jon,
I admit i’ve been absent for a few days. this thing called work has been a bit consuming. I’m a farmer and the last 6 weeks has been all consuming picking the grapes. The food has not been as balanced as I would like and my workout schedule has really been hit and miss. Sleep has been down right non existent..about 4 to 5 hours per night. I find that when I am tired I tend to eat more sugar and carbs.

The point that I’d like to make is that being fit and healthy is not a flash in the pan thing. it is not just a 10 in 10 kinda deal it is a lifetime commitment. We have ups and downs… fatter times and leaner times. For me the key is to stay focused on a lifetime of good health, ride the highs and lows and try to stay on the lean side more than the fat side. Never give up the quest. I’m in with you on the 10 pounds…or at least until I can see my stomach muscles again and my 34 levis are hangin a bit.

Thanks for your great spirit!

Paul;

Cool deal that you’re on board…but a bit of clarification: 10 in 10 IS a lifetime strategy. You keep going until you’re done. This is not over in 10 weeks (as my side links and first blog will tell you)…it’s a forever and ever amen kinda deal.

Hi Jon, Guys,
Just wanted to share an insight. I started this challenge with a lot of motivation, did weights every second day, and cardio, often double cardio. I completely lost the continual worried feeling, anxiety etc. I missed a day or 2 of cardio having to travel, and its back again. So in addition to the great things exercise is doing for your heart and hips, it also immediately ups your mood. I have also found it addicting, and I wake up thinking about going out for my bike ride, and miss it if I can’t.
Keep at it everyone.

Hi Jon

Just joined the challenge and it’s great to have such a serious issue dealt with humour and realism. About the doctors- I have to agree that a degree means nothing! A little knowledge applied badly is a lot more dangerous than sheer ignorance. Most of the medical fraternity think they know it all even after 6 hours of basic nutrition. My 6 year old probably knows more about good nutrition? Anyway, great reading and I’m certainly up for the challenge - have a great deal of “blob” to move and I reckon you have given me the key!

Hi Jon,
I love the Blog… the 10 in 10 challenge is a great tool for inspiration and motivation. So far I’m down 7 pounds and have hit my goal for this year of getting below 20% body fat - have been struggling to get there for some time and the challenge was just the incentive I needed to really focus - thanks! Time to move the goal posts…
BTW a PHd is just a decoration unless it inspires and educates. I’m currently studying Psychology majoring in biospychology. I had to write a paper on stress. My tutor wrote back to say it was the first time he’d received a paper on eustress (positive stress)… I guess it’s all in the way you look at things.

Just fyi…I know how special that bike ride is for you, and yeah….you rock. Behind you girl…100%.

To Liezel:
No blobs…just a lady who happens to be carrying a bit more body fat than she desires. : ) Smart 6-year-old…but you’re probably right. Kids have figured out that beer commercials suck, but adults haven’t…hey, they’re on to something. : )

To Trish:
The FIRST paper on Eustress??? Surely you jest! (“Positive” stress, for everyone’s benefit, in a short-order answer, is stress you subject your body to that produces anabolic or anti-entropic effects. Exericse is stressful, for example, but lowers blood pressure. A crossword puzzle is ‘stressful’ to the mind but an ideal exericse for keeping neruon functions healthy in older people, etc.) Perfect answer to the PhD issue as well…agreed 100%. Welcome, and keep those insights coming…oh, and YEAH to the 7!!

Jon, you crack me up. I have been quietly 10in10ing away here down under (in Australia) but I did get sucked in by yr friendly ‘family’ email to log in see how y’all were doing. Great to see everyone making committments to their health, since I got hooked by yr M-Power series, I have been making a lifetime committment daily and whenever I get tired or lazy and want to skip my routine or start making bedroom eyes to a potato after lunchtime, I amuse myself by thinking What Would Jon Do and I hear yr voice reminding me not to park my car by the side of the road!!! I gotta do something about that voice…….!!! I have lost 16 kilos of body fat in about 5 months, and the 10in10 keeps me hard at it till new year - keepin my goals alive.
Rock on and thanks for the great training advice and motivation.

Whew! I finally caught up with all the reading (so am combining thoughts in one posting). Really good stuff in here Jon. Thanks for helping keep all of us motivated and moving in the right direction! I lost about 53lbs four years ago, and am bound and determined to keep it off. I’m amazed by people who whine about not having time to eat 5-6 times a day. Get real! I changed over to frequent meals when I was in graduate school, for crying out loud! I still do it while managing a research lab. I’m lucky if I get five minutes without interuption. Plan ahead and get a life. There was nothing more helpful to me than eating more frequently, not only for my health, but for my ability to *think*. I no longer have afternoon stupidity. I even send people out of my lab to eat when they are having trouble performing, since usually they just need fuel! As for eating out, one of the things that I didn’t see mentioned is a plan that my boyfriend and I use. We order one entree and then share it.

I do have a question for you Jon. Do you have any suggestions on how to get motivated to exercise when dealing with daily pain? I have a severe allergy to rubber compounds that leaves me with arthritic-like symptoms as well as muscle cramps. I’m already up at 4am, and really don’t want to get up earlier to exercise (the neighbors don’t quiet down until close to midnight, so sleep is already hard to come by). I’d like to think that getting stronger and more flexible will help reduce the amount of pain my allergy causes, but I won’t find out until I get that way. Trying to convince myself to exercise when I’m hurting is like trying to reason with a three year old. Right now I’m only getting exercise on the weekends. Any suggestions?

I typed into the blog a couple weeks ago and said I was ‘IN’…but the truth of the matter is Im stuck in the same place Ive been for a couple years….Im carrying an extra 15-20 pounds that makes me feel sluggish and gross ….after being in the best shape of my life and feeling great…the fat slowly creeped up on me….well actually it felt like one day 10 pounds of fat was splattered onto my body….I know people say ‘oh you look great’ and ‘I wish I only had 15 pounds to lose….well the fact of the matter is it doesnt matter if its 100lbs….the mind set is still the same….I used to think the same thing about my friend who is a size 4…when she said ‘I feel fat’…but then I realized we all have different bodies and anyone can ‘feel’ fat and not look fat….please excuse my rambling…this is like a catharsis for me….this has been my passion for years …I competed a few years back and used to give advise all the time…I could not get through a workout without someone asking me for advise ….and now I feel like I cant even do it for myself….Its hard to look in the mirror at the gym without some negative thoughts….I have read a ton of books on the power of thoughts…and I know how damaging this is, but I cant seem to crawl out of this hole….I want to just hop into my mindset of a few years ago but I know that its not that easy…I have paid people to help me, hoping that the financial investment would be some extra incentive….the the fact of the matter is I KNOW WHAT TO DO….its just a matter of doing it….Ive never stopped working out, and that just goes to show that diet is 99% of the equation.
Jon I even called your cell phone last night, but didnt leave a message….didnt want to bother you cause I know I need more that a few minutes….I would eventually love to do what you do…not the blog…cause IM not as witty as you, but my passion is to help people be fit and healthy…especially youths….well bottom line is it has to start with me.
ok I feel somewhat better…thanks for listening.

I’ve been reading along these last 20+ days and I am committed to your challenge, but your latest entry moved me to say ‘thanks!’. I received my life assess last week and have listened to two weeks of the Mpower series and honestly there is so much good information there that I was feeling a bit overwhelmed so today’s blog on where to start was extremely helpful! Honestly, I am a little disappointed in my results so far in the challenge, but I realized that I have not FULLY committed myself to the program.

Lisa, I was listening and you made me realize that it does all start with me and until I completely ‘buy in’, I will continue to be frustrated and disappointed with my results.

Thanks Jon for giving me a place to start!

I got out the tight pants like you suggested. It was only three years ago that I looked great in these. Now I’ll have to metabolize/release 4 inches off the abdomen/hips and 5 inches off the waist. That was a good return to focus on why I’m doing this.

You hit my hot button when with the doctor thing. You SO right! Unfortunately, most doctors have become prescription writers and drug pushers. My mom died of cancer at 56 years old. She was taking 31 pills a day for various “conditions.” She was a diabetic, had high blood pressure, back problems, and more. The cancer treatment was even more barbaric. I decided right then that I would not go down that path. If you are smart and want to stay healthy, stay away from doctors and their pills. Whew! Sorry about the ranting . .but you DID push my button, Jon.. .you bad boy!

Yesterday was a great beginning for the upcoming week but it kind of crushed for some reason in the mid afternoon. I had a great workout that i have changed around. Then I and “self” had a good conversation and decided that we should push it harder (inspierd by your conversation with your self). So, now self has disapeared somewhere and I am left alone with muscle pain…
I work in the diabetes clinic (medical clerk). Our team consists of some doctors, few nurses and of course a dietitian. How can a dietition be taken seriously if she herself is overweight??
There is absolutely no insparation if a patient comes to see her and she tells him that he has to eat a certain way to loose weight yet she herself has a “problem” with food…What kind of service are we providing???
well, on that note you made me laugh again and your “who’s your daddy now” made my imagination fly (so to speak) :)

Just a quick comment in defense of doctors…I am an ER nurse and work with and around many different doctors. Many doctors prescribe medication because the patient insists on it. People would rather take a pill to fix their problem than go on a diet and exercise. If they don’t get what they are looking for from one doc, they will go to another to get it. Lucky I work in an ER where they don’t have much choice:)
Ya, and some of doctors are just ammoral, fat slobs.

An education is only good for getting a start in many jobs. I don’t know who makes the rules, I’m guessing the schools who charge $350 a credit hour. It’s much more impressive to find someone who has created a career without following the rules. Now that takes intelligence and creativity.
Oh and by the way…Jon you’d better NOT quit blogging. That might cause a little uprising.

Anyhow, one quick question and I will give you the answer as well.

What do you call a person who graduates in the bottom of there medical class?

DOCTOR!!

Scary thought.

Joe,
I am in a medical profession, but I am not picking on only them so, here is my saying—there is a bottom of the class for every profession!

To All
Wow…thanks for all the comments on this one! Hopefully the humor didn’t get lost in the message, and vice-versa.

Since I’m being summoned into my bed by my rubber doll…er, my…hmmm…GIRLfriend…yeah, that’s it…I’ll make this short, but important:

Doctors are crucial, and “PhD” can obviously refer to a doctorate in anything. I’m not dissing all doctors or those with said degrees. My rant is on the average doc-in-the-box I see these days who could care less about spending more than 82 seconds with any patient before scribbling off some script without bothering to cover the bases…all in the name of insurance, drug profits, and greed.

If that’s you…YOU SUCK. Get a job at Wendy’s. Please. Do the world a favor. Or, better yet, declare that being a medicore, safe, cozy doctor is NOT what your life was given to your for, and become EXCELLENT. Anyone can become excellent given a large enough reason why.

For those of you who do not fit this bill, we owe you our health in many ways. Thank you for spending those years and years in school and making a difference every day.

Now, will you PLEASE chip in and teach the slackers among you how to ‘really’ practice medicine? All of us lower forms of life would be highly grateful.

While there’s a bottom in every profession as Cherie pointed out, few entail cracking your rib cage open. I can deal with the bottom of the class when it comes to CPAs…the worst you get is an audit or a higher tax bill. Doctors? Nope…you’re either excellent (and that means learned as well as open-minded, curious, kind, and a genuine healer at heart), or you suck and need to work at Wendy’s.

CPAs and other professionals can suck and still be okay. You guys have decided to take on the roll of GOD, for all practical purposes, so you better damn well act like…it? Him? You know what I mean. Take the position seriously, and that means a Jerry Maguire if you ask me: less patients.

Radical concept, but I know those who have done it. My favorite cardiologist got disgruntled with his NYC practice and subbing drugs and cracked sternums for treatment, so he’s now a small-town (Tyler, Texas) doctor who treats about 80% of his patients with CoQ-10 and alternative medicine. This is an MD we’re talking about, btw. He’s happier, and he’s making a major difference…oh, and he performs about 1/20th the amount of open heart as he used to while seeing about 2/3 the amount of clients. You do the math. He has some interesting things to say about the pharmies and their pull on this industry.

I hear Lipitor burns really well…

Clear? Good!

Just noticed the pain questions. (If I skipped others, remind me…I endeavor to answer everyone I can.)

Start with coconut oil and add fish oil and flax to the mix next week. These three oils will go a LONG way to helping autoimmune disorders like you’re describing.

Second, cut out any inflammatory foods; processed flower, wheat or allergen-heavy foods like dairy, peanuts, etc.

Try that and see if the pain diminishes. Just know we’re behind you, and yeah…what courage to say, “How can I make this happen”, instead of, “I cannot make this happen because…”

Hero of the night award. Please keep me posted, cool?

Not sure if I can name a brand here, I only use it (no company ties) but I have found a brand of coconut oil that I love. I go to the web site because I couldn’t find coconut oil to eat in my town. Tropical traditions has refined organic oil but what I REALLY like is the coconut creme concentrate-which is ground up coconuts containing 70% oil,(1 tsp has 31 cals/3 fat/1 carb/.3 protein) it tastes like eating a coconut, it’s HEAVEN…excuse me I made the mistake of looking at the jar…..opening the lid…Ohhhhhhhhhhhmyyyyyyyyyyyyy..see you bloggers later…….

Terra,
Can I suggest something.. do you mind Jon?? I knowthe usual fair is grains with greens balanced and meats… and not wanting to push anything on anyone here.. but One of the few reasons I started looking into bodybuilding ways of eating and then finding the way I eat now… was because of not only weight but because I ahve had flu like arthritic like feelings in legs and knees most of my life.. No matter what kinds of tests were done Dr’s always told me I was find… Ok..so now.. after say four months…I have to say that… I feel lighter and I am in no pain any more.. truth I swear!! none..if I do have it it is because I bac slide and eat pizza, or drink real coffee or eat a burger … I am learning that starches like grains and pizza and caffen like coffe and tea… are not for me… My blood gets washed out of the crap… the toxins go away or at least diluted alot with the juicey fruits and all the veggie I have been having… My pain is no more.. wished I had found this years ago..I was never much of a veggie eater growing up.. got sick of being fat and asked ok.. now bodybuilders have been around for along tme.. longer then fad diets… what are they doing right?/ then I found Bill Phillips.. Tom Venuto (sp? sorry) and no Jon.. these guys pointed me in the right way… then I found david Wolfe.. touted as a guru.. maybe maybe not.. but fact is fact for my body.. those arthritic pains are now gone.. for good as long as I continue to eat this way for me.. now for the fat..
See it was the pain and lack of energy that has held me back from movement which made the loss of weight something impossible to do without.. I am now getting the energy, motivations, and pain free enough to now want to move to rid myself of fat.

My only questions is why did it take me so long to find all this.. We need more education in schools…

to me doctors.. most of them, are there to make a buck.. not to heal and to find the cause.. I now know the cause of all pains and problems with my health.. toxima.. backed up toxima leads to more problems..ok I am done.. Education is the key.. is all I am saying here…
